Josiah Willard Gibbs

This bronze bas-relief in memory of Josiah Willard Gibbs was a gift by the Nobel prize winning physical chemist Walther Nernst when he visited Yale in 1906 to give the Silliman lectures. It was moved to its present location in the J. Willard Gibbs Laboratory in 1955.

This bronze bas-relief in memory of Josiah Willard Gibbs was a gift by the Nobel prize winning physical chemist Walther Nernst when he visited Yale in 1906 to give the Silliman lectures. It was moved to its location in the J. Willard Gibbs Laboratory in 1955 until the building’s demolition in 2016.  It is currently in storage.
